- "Gideon TENERSON" served in Regiment 5 of the Virginia Militia in the War of 1812 under Lt. Col. Dickinson, Col. Scott and Lt. Col. Coleman.
Gideon is listed In the 1817 Green Co., KY Tax List.
In 1820 Green Co., KY census Gideon's household has 3 males 16-25 listed and one males under the age of 10 years. Females listed included two girls under the age of 10 along with Gideon's wife in the 16-25 age group.
The census informs us of three manufacturing jobs. This reflects at least two males indentured to Gideon to learn the "Hattin [sic] Hat trade. In 1824 a young man by the name of John Prince was indentured to Gideon until age 21 to receive ..."training in the art and mysteries of hating business".
Census tallied one white adult working in agriculture and one slave.
Gideon was a charter member of the Baptist Church in 1820 Green Co., KY
The 1830 Greensburg, Green County, KY. census listed additional children as 3 males under the age of 5 with two in the 5-9 years. Gideon listed as in the 30-39 year group. His wife also listed in the 30-39. One female in the 5-9 years group and 1 female 10-14 years age.
In the 1840 Green County census lists 5 males under the age of 15; 1 in the 15-19 years and Gideon, Sr. in the 40-45. Four females under the age of 14; one in the 15-19 age and one in the 40-49 age group. The count of slaves had grown to 9 male and 9 females. Persons engaged in agriculture 19. Note that Gideon was listed as Gideon JENISON in the transcript census.
Gideon Sr and family moved to Sumner County TN before 1850 census. (District 12, Family # 117). His son Gideon B. , wife and 2 year old daughter lived close by. It is unclear why Gideon, Sr., died in Bond County, Illinois in 1857. No known Tennison's lived in that area of Illinois at that time. Gideon's wife died the following year. Both are buried in Old Nebo Cemetery, Greenville, Bond Co, Illinois.
There are very few documents from Levi Sims Tennison. Some researchers list Levi Sims' son Gideon as the son of John B. Tennison. One reason for this is that his birth place is listed as North Carolina in the census. John B. Tennison, (son of Ignatius Tennison from Caswell Co., NC.) lists his children in his will. By the time of John B. Tennison's will, Gideon was living in Sumner County, TN. This could be used as a argument of why Gideon was not listed as a descendant of John B. Tennison from Caswell Co., NC.
DNA has connected this line to our family and given that all other Tennison families of this time period in Green Co., KY were also from our family most researchers concur that John Sims Tennison of Amherst County, VA and the Levi Sims Tennison that moved from Amherst Co., VA to Green Co., KY are in the correct father son relationship. The reason for this explanation is that John Sims' cousin from Caswell Co., NC, Ignatius Tennison family relocated to Green Co., KY in early 1800s. John Tennison who died in Caswell Co. NC in 1808. was Ignatius' brother and cousin to the John Sims Tennison of Green Co., KY. Some researchers have confused the two Levis and /or birthplaces of both.
Note that John Tennison of Caswell Co., NC had a son, named Levi and he used both names TENNISON and DENNIS in much of the court document in Caswell Co., NC. He should not be confused with this Levi Tennison found in Green Co., KY. *Levi Sims Tennison is the son of John Sims Tennison. However both men named Levi belong to our family.
David Carl TENNYSON lists Gideon this way?
Gideon Tennison , b. ca. 1795 NC? d. aft 1860 TN?
